Sean McElwain is now doing guitar instead of banjo and Grainne Hambly is teaching concertina instead of harp.  Otherwise, the details are the same.

Music & Dance Workshops with Teada’s Irish Christmas in America – Dec. 13th

The musicians and dancer from Teada’s Irish Christmas in America show (www.irishchristmasinamerica.com/) will be giving music and dance workshops on Monday, December 13th from 6:30-8:30pm.  This is a great opportunity to take a workshop from a group of stellar traditional musicians and a top Sean-nos dancer.  The workshops will be at Gonzaga High School (19 I St NW, Washington, DC 20001), near Union Station.

The group is offering the following instrument and dance workshops:
Fiddle – Oisin MacDiarmada
Guitar – Sean McElwain

Accordion – Seamus Begley
Concertina – Grainne Hambly
Uilleann Pipes – Tommy Martin
Sean Nos Dance – Brian Cunningham

Each workshop is limited to ten people in order to provide an intimate learning environment.  The cost is $30 per person and is payable the evening of the workshop.

Fundraiser for Mick Carroll

Mick Carroll, a self-employed carpenter from Co. Offaly and long-time resident of the Washington area, was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor while on a visit to Ireland to attend the All-Ireland football finals. A result of this is Mick will no longer be working and will remain in Ireland.

PLEASE COME OUT THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14, FOR AN AFTERNOON OF GREAT MUSIC AND DANCE TO HELP RAISE FUNDS TO DEFRAY MICK’S EXPENSES AND HELP HIM GET SETTLED IN IRELAND.

National Heritage Fellowship Concert

On Friday, September 24, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. EDT the National Endowment for the Arts will present a live webcast of its annual NEA National Heritage Fellowships Concert. This is the first year the concert has been available to those unable to attend in person.  To access the webcast, visit arts.gov the afternoon of September 24 for instructions. An archive of the concert will be available following the event.

Afro-Cuban drumming, classical Indian dancing, and Bluegrass music are just a few of the folk and traditional arts that will take center stage at this concert, which features lively music and dance performances alongside demonstrations of centuries’ old crafts, and engaging interviews with the 2010 NEA National Heritage Fellows, recipients of the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. Nick Spitzer, host of public radio’s American Routes, will emcee the concert.

2010 National Heritage Fellowship Concert with Mike Rafferty

Friday, September 24 @ 8pm at the Music Center at Strathmore.

As you likely already know, Mike Rafferty won a 2010 National Heritage Fellowship!  A concert of all the Heritage Fellows (including Mike) will take place Friday, September 24 at the Music Center at Strathmore, which is at 5301 Tuckerman Lane in North Bethesda, Maryland.  It’s a big concert and a free concert!  However, tickets are only available through the Music Center (301-581-5100) and the House of Musical Traditions (301-270-9090) and there is a limit of 6.  If you intend on going, do get on this quick as I imagine tickets will go quickly!  For further details, see the 2010 NEA Heritage Flyer, which can be downloaded by clicking here or on the image above.

AND!  For those of you who are unable to attend the concert, you’re encouraged to watch via a live webcast at www.arts.gov!  Also, an archive of the concert will be available following the event!
