The Sligo Masters, a new documentary film which looks at the lives of some of Ireland’s most famous traditional musicians, who spent most of their lives in New York, will be screened in several locations in New York in February 2015. Launched at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2014 and screened on Irish broadcaster TG4, this one hour documentary film focusses on the three great Irish fiddle players – Michael Coleman, James Morrison and Paddy Killoran. It was filmed on location in Sligo, New York and Dublin, and casts an eye on the early 20th century when these musicians were in the vanguard of traditional Irish music on the world stage. This film depicts their fame as recording artists, the influence their recordings had on their peers and on the generations who came after; and their fall, how the Crash of 1929 decimated the recording industry and brought the Masters to their knees. From the rambling houses of south County Sligo to the world stage in New York, we recall their rise within the recording industry, the indelible mark they left on Irish music at home and abroad, and the personal tragedies which evoke both musical genius and human frailty.

This is a major event and all music lovers are urged to attend one of the screenings!
