Sean Nós Workshop & Concert at Glucksman Ireland House NYU
Saturday, November 23rd, 1:00 p.m.; 7:00 p.m.
Máirín Uí Chéide and Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde, well-known sean-nós singers from the Connamara and Donegal Gaeltachts, will lead an afternoon workshop in the sean-nós style.
Sean-nós, which is Irish for “old style,” is a highly ornamented style of traditional Irish music that is performed unaccompanied. The interaction between the performer and the audience is crucial to understanding the sean-nós musical tradition, as the style was developed to accompany daily work inside and outside the home, to express the emotions of love and sadness of daily existence, to record local and other historical events and to mark the loss of family and friends by death or by emigration.
Mairin Uí Chéide has won many awards including the coveted Corn Ui Riada, the highest honor in sean-nós singing at the Oireachtas na Gaeilge. A Boston resident, Mairin has performed across the United States and in Ireland. She has been inducted into The Hall of Fame of The Northeast Region of the North American Comhaltas Ceolteoirí Éireann.
Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde was the winner of Corn Uí Riada, the Oireachtas sean-nós singing competition, in 2009. He has performed in festivals and concerts in Ireland and throughout much of Europe. Inspired by the culture of his native home and with professional musical training under singers such as Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill and Lillis Ó Laoire, Doimnic has released an album titled “Saol na Suáilce” and founded Cór Thaobh a Leithid, a four part choir of traditional singers.
