Sean-Nós (“old style”) Dancing is a traditional form of Irish solo dancing with roots in rural Ireland. Spontaneous and improvisational, sean-nós is a percussive form of dance which works closely with the rhythms of Irish music. “Battering” in set dancing is the loose, flat-footed style of “drumming” footwork which complements the movements in the sets. Popular in reel sets like the Connemara and the Plain, battering adds an additional element of rhythm and fun. Mary Beth Taylor, Director of Scoil Rince Taylor Irish Dancing & Sean-Nós Dancing School in Dublin, has taught and performed sean-nós dancing in Ireland, Europe, the USA, and the South Pacific. Along with teaching, she has competed in the All Ireland Sean-Nós Competition and has choreographed for television and the stage.
