10th Annual Somerset Folk Harp Festival

PARSIPPANY NJ: The 10th annual Somerset Folk Festival takes place July 29-August 1 at the Hilton Parsippany, where hundreds of harpers from around the world will meet to take more than 80 workshops from 27 presenters and performers in a 4-day celebration of the folk harp. The concerts are open to the public and feature some of the top players in an international showcase of many kinds of harps and genres of music. There is a specific focus this year on the music of Ireland and Scotland, with headliners such as Gráinne Hambly from Mayo and William Jackson and Maeve Gilchrist from Scotland. There are 14 hands-on workshops and lectures on a variety of Celtic topics:

CONCERTS: The concerts are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Scottish harp champion Janet Witman is on Thursday night along with Paraguayan harpist Nicolas Carter and Renaissance harpist Nancy Hurrell. Scottish harper Maeve Gilchrist is featured Friday night as is Sunita Staneslow from Israel, Harper Tasche on the cross-strung harp and Rhett Barnwell doing Bach and Beethoven. Gráinne Hambly and William Jackson headline the Saturday concert along with Paraguayan harpist Alfredo Ortiz and American harpist Kim Robertson. Tickets are $25 and available to the public at the door. Gráinne Hambly will host a Carolan Marathon on Saturday night after the concert for harps and any other instruments who want to sit in.

If you go: The $15 Visitor’s ticket can be purchased at the door for admittance to the showroom and the special public workshops and daytime concerts. Evening concerts, at 7:30pm, are general seating at $25 per ticket, which can be purchased in advance until July 26 by calling Kathy DeAngelo at 856-795-7637 or at the door on the night of the concert.
