Irish Music Classes Thru O’Neill Malcom This Fall

The O’Neill Malcom Branch, working in conjunction with the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the National Park Service and Montgomery County, MD are proud to announce the following classes this Fall:

Beginning Bodhran (Irish Hand Drum) $120
Jesse Winch
Class: M, Sep 21–Oct 26, 6–7pm, Arcade 301
Class focuses on the traditional Kerry-style of playing emphasizing drum positioning, stick control and basic styles. Tune types studied include the jig, reel, hornpipe, slip jig, slide and polka. Discussion will center around the definition and characteristics of Irish traditional music including the history and role of percussion. More info: Minimum age 10. 6 sessions.

Irish Fiddle for Beginners $95

Class: M, Oct 5–Nov 9, 6–7pm, Arcade 304
For the beginning violinist—one who has substantially completed Suzuki Violin Book 1 or has rudimentary understandingof scales &; arpeggios in A, D & G and slur, 2, 3 or 4 notes per bow with ease. Learn a variety of traditional Irish dance tunes: polkas, hornpipes, jigs (slides, slip), reels, barn dances; basic ornamentation. Taught by ear. Info: Minimum age 8. 6 sessions.

Irish Pennywhistle for Beginners $160

Class: M, Oct 19–Nov 30, 4–5pm, Arcade 301
Learn the Irish Pennywhistle in this afterschool course! We’ll cover breathing, fingering, playing by ear and start learning Irish tunes and beginning ornamentation. Supply fee of $15 payable to instructor covers pennywhistle and tune booklet for each student to keep. More or 301.592.0101. Minimum age 10. 7 sessions.

Irish Bouzouki $165

Class 2: Tu, Jan 5–Feb 9, 8–9:15pm, Arcade 301
Course will cover techniques of accompaniment and melody using Irish-style GDAD tuning. Well known session tunes will serves as examples and includes reels, jigs and hornpipes. Also included: instrument set up, string types and pick types. Bring Irish-style bouzouki, octave mandolin, mandola or similar. More info: 703.969.6909 or Minimum age 15. 6 sessions.

Basic Irish flute instruction for beginning and intermediate players. Explore tuning, scales, simple techniques, fingering, embochure, posture, ornamentation, basic repertoire and recommended listenings. More Minimum age 12. 6 sessions.
