The Scottish and Irish Music Festival and Fair has been rescheduled for March 23, 24, & 25 2012, all indoors, at the Valley Forge Convention Center, King of Prussia, PA. They say it is 27 hours of non-stop music on several simultaneous stages, as follows:

Friday concert 7:30 pm to late.
Saturday 9:30 am to 11:45 pm.
Sunday 10:00 am to 7:30 pm

Commodore Barry Club in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Ceili Group presents the third event in its 2011-2012 Music Series

“How the West of Ireland Helped to Save Uilleann Bagpiping”, an informative talk by Dr. Scott B. Spencer with accompaniment and demonstration by the talented piper Ivan Goff will be presented on February 18, 2012 at 3:30 pm. The discussion by Dr. Spencer, the most recent Visiting Research Scholar at the Centre for Irish Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway in association with the American Irish Cultural Institute, will cover the recent history and revival of Uilleann bagpiping.

The lecture is from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and will be followed by an evening concert starting at 8:00 pm featuring piper Ivan Goff and guitarist/singer Eamon O’Leary.

Based in Brooklyn, Dubliner Ivan Goff plays Irish concert flute and uilleann pipes. In addition to duets with many traditional musicians such as Míchéal Ó Raghallaigh, Tony DeMarco, and Iarla Ó Lionáird, Ivan has also performed with internationally acclaimed Irish traditional bands Dervish, Danú, Téada, Lúnasa, The Green Fields of America with Mick Moloney, is a former member of Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul and was featured in several well-known productions including extended engagements with Riverdance.

While growing up in Dublin, Eamon O’Leary developed an interest in Irish music through his friendship with the Mayock family, noted traditional musicians originally from County Mayo. When he moved to New York City in 1992, he met guitarist John Doyle and fiddle player Patrick Ourceau, among others, and has since become a fixture in the city’s thriving Irish music scene. Eamon has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, performing with many of Irish music’s great players, including Paddy Keenan, Mick Moloney, Tommy Peoples, and James Keane, and has recorded with singer Susan McKeown and flute player Emer Mayock.

“How the West of Ireland Saved Uilleann Bagpiping” is free to Philadelphia Ceili Group members. Philadelphia Ceili Group membership is $15 annually for individuals and can be purchased at the door.

Evening Concert Tickets are $13 for members and $15 for non-members.

The Sligo Creek Hedge School offers Irish music and culture summer camps for children ages 7-19 in Silver Spring, MD.  The camps include pennywhistle and bodhran (Irish drum) instruction, singing, poetry, field trips to instruments builders, crafts and more!  We have a special program for higher level teenage musicians interested in ensemble performing.

This year’s camp dates are:

Teen Celtic Band Week, June 24-29, ages 12-19

Musicians’ Week July 1-6, (no camp on 7/4), ages 9-14

Intro to Irish Music & Arts, July 23-27, ages 9-14

Sprouting Celts for ages 7-9 will be offered as an afternoon program at the CCE MAD (Music & Dance Week) July 9-13

Jesse Smith plays to the heart and from the heart. He was born to music. His father John is a singer and guitarist and his mother, Donna Long, is a noted pianist and fiddler who learned from her father. And Jesse’s fiddle teacher was Brendan Mulvihill. Yes, he grew up in the thriving Baltimore-D.C. Irish scene and moved to Ireland in 1998 to immerse himself further in the music. Now he performs, records and teaches on both sides of the Atlantic. He has a special fondness for the old tunes of the 78 rpm era, particularly those of Sligo fiddlers James Morrison, Paddy Killoran and Michael Coleman. His own recordings and those he made as a member of the band Danu have been enthusiastically received. Critics praise his playing for its sensitivity and tastefulness, admiring both his bowing and his fingerwork.

For our concert, Jesse is joined by New York-based guitarist and vocalist Ryan McGiver, who also performs and teaches widely. His work has been showcased on Irish radio, he tours with award-winning singer Susan McKeown, and he has accompanied uilleann piper Cillian Vallely (Lunasa), fiddlers Liz and Yvonne Kane, and young concertina phenom Edel Fox, among others. His debut album features re-interpretations of Appalachian ballads and an all-star lineup of musicians. When not touring or working as a stone mason, he can be found at NYC music sessions.

And, in honor of the day, one attendee will leave with a $100 gift certificate for dinner at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo. Six more will leave with a bottle of champagne (non-Irish)! And, there’ll be chocolates, (donation by Cat Tucker—Thank you!), champagne and other indulgences for all on the break!
